Rubber and Asphalt Roads |
As
one major application of crumb rubber,
rubber modified asphalt could have the largest
market for waste tire recycling. Moreover, this
application could result in an important
improvement for road construction technology.
Rubber modified asphalt has been known to
improve the rheological properties at low and
high temperatures and provide a life up to
three times longer than conventional
asphalt. Even though rubber modified asphalt may
cost up to 100 % more than regular asphalt, the
advantages may justify the added cost.
Recent studies have shown that
chemically-modified crumb rubber asphalt can
overcome several problems with rubber modified
asphalt and improve the required properties for
road construction.

SA Tyre
Recyclers is the only tyre recycling company in Cape
Town certified as an “end user”, enabling it to
receive compensation for disposing of waste tires. Even
though other companies receive the “end user fee” for
using tyre derived fuel, crumb rubber, and the
use of shredded tyre material for landfill cover, we are
the only recycler. It is an exciting position to be in,
because Government is looking for us to provide the most
environmentally friendly source for disposing of its
waste tires. Besides handling the mainstream of
waste tires generated on an annual basis, there are
millions stockpiled waste tires to be cleaned up
nationwide. SA Tyre Recyclers has completed several tyre
pile cleanup contracts, including the contract for Phase
One of the largest tyre pile in the Western Cape,
the largest and most costly cleanup in South Africa,
a one million tyre cleanup.
